I’ve used this for years, and you’ll either love it or look at me funny when you hear it: anywhere that you need to frequently change numbers — say, hit points on a character sheet — just stick a piece of non-glossy clear tape over that spot, and then use a pencil to write in the number.
You can erase pencil from tape very easily, and it will hold up for years as long as you don’t accidentally poke holes in it. Enjoy!
Wonderful, thank you.
You’re welcome! I don’t remember if I came up with it or learned it from someone else as a kid, but it’s a great trick. 🙂
I’ve used it once or twice. I’ve found in many games as long as there’s a decent space for writing hp, where during a battle you can just cross off the last amount and write in a new one, that sheets last long enough that there are often other reasons to use a new sheet (like everything else is getting all mucked up, or you really want to re-organize things, or the GM has come up with a new sheet that makes things easier given the rules tweaks since the campaign started, or…)
In my Arcana Unearthed and Arcana Evolved games, only one or two people ever asked for a new sheet.
Still a great idea.
In Rune Quest, we used sheet protectors and fine-point overhead markers (because in RQ you’re keeping track of 8 HP totals, possibly 3 or 4 spell point totals [POW storage crystals plus native POW], experience checks for skills, and three or four other things).

I used to do the same thing when I played BattleTech — my army binder was full of those sheet protectors, and I’d just slot in my units before each game. Marking in dozens of little circles is a real pain in the butt otherwise. 😉
Ah, Battletech. 😉
Yeah, I’ve used tape before, but Frank’s right– you usually alter the character sheet before you actually erase a hole through it. (Well, I usually do, but I also keep my HP on the dry-erase board where I keep track of initiatives, so that’s part of it too.)
