Random Thoughts on Gaming, Gamers, and Other Things.
Every now and then, I’ll hear or think of something that seems cool, but isn’t worth an entire blog post. When I collect a few of these nuggets o’ wisdom (or dross), I’ll post ’em under Wandering Damage, along with something I overheard at Gen Con. -TelasGaming should be a part of your social life, not a replacement for it.
Does anyone else think it odd that a player who has never seen the inside of a gym will have a character who spends eight hours a day exercising or training? (I know it’s fantasy, but come on…)
Before you make that clever comment or pop-culture reference at the table, ask yourself if it will contribute to the game and/or the mood, or are you just showing off?
Some days, all you need is a clue; some days, you need a clue-by-four.
Things Overheard at Gen Con:
“I do have a strong forearm.”
I’ll bet you do…
So…what are you saying about my mousing arm, exactly? 😉
It’s not the mousing arm that worries me… Both hands on the keyboard, mister!
Actually, this was the quote that made me decide to start my list of “things overheard at Gen Con”. It was said with such assertiveness by such a stereotypical gamer that I had to literally bite my tongue to keep from laughing. I’ll add more to the next one…
I think its exactly the opposite. RPGs are escapism – to do what you don’t do in real life. I remember reading a thesis “the Psychology of Role-playing Games” (I’m serious…) and it said in many cases Player Characters are reflections of our true inner self – the person we would be if it wasn’t for social constraints and inhibitions….and how I look differently now upon my “friends”.
