Gnomecast #137 – Playing with Canon

Join Ang, Jared, and Phil for a discussion about running games in settings with established canonical storylines in other media. Is it canon that these gnomes will end up in the stew?

I remember 7 Days. Enjoyed it, though I remember I stopped watching it. I think they were having trouble sustaining it under the original premise, which is why they added the time traveler from decades later (which I did not enjoy).

I have for years wanted to run a Marvel Super Heroes (TSR version) game based on What If? (Vol. 2) #114, where the heroes and villains got trapped on Battleworld after the Secret Wars. Twenty-five years later, their descendants return to Earth. Eighties attitudes meet the modern world, but one where the worlds greatest heroes (and villains) have been missing for 25 years.

One of my friends wants to play the child of Doom and the Scarlet Witch. I talked him into going with the “canon” character who is the child of Doom and the Enchantress. This is a player who is always looking the advantage, pressing the rules as far as they can go. I’m less worried about that happening in an MSH game than a super-crunchy game like Pathfinder.
