In 2014 we willed a gamer holiday into existence, New Game Day [1] (February 2nd), and it worked! In its first year, New Game Day was celebrated by over 65 gaming groups worldwide, including gamers in Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Mexico, Spain, and the United States
While New Game Day operates independently of the Stew — it’s not “our” holiday; it belongs to everyone — we’re back to support it with over $200 in prizes.

What is New Game Day?
New Game Day [1] is a free annual event for tabletop gamers worldwide – a day to celebrate tabletop roleplaying games (RPGs) and board games by playing something you’ve never played before. It’s easy to remember, too: “New on 2/2.”
We hope that on 2/2 every year you’ll take some time to play one or more new games, support the folks who design and sell those games, and share your love of games with others.
That’s all there is to it: a day to play new games. It’s a simple idea (simple enough that I was surprised it hadn’t already been done!), but hopefully one that will resonate with gamers worldwide.
Win prizes for playing new games
Gnome Stew and Engine Publishing [2] are providing prizes for sharing your New Game Day experience with us.
How to enter: On New Game Day, February 2, post a comment on our New Game Day feature article (which will go up February 1st) about the new game or games you played to celebrate New Game Day. Because time zones are weird, any comment made on Feb. 1, 2, or 3 will be eligible.
Small print: Comments before February 1 or after February 3 won’t be eligible. You can comment as many times as you like, but your first comment will be your entry. As always, members of the Gnome Stew team aren’t eligible to win.
How to win: We’ll choose random winners for each prize using random.org [3], and contact those winners using the email address associated with their Gnome Stew account. (Make sure it’s a valid email address so we can get in touch with you.)
The prizes: Courtesy of the Stew and Engine Publishing, we’re offering 6 prizes for New Game Day:
- A $100 Amazon.com [4] gift certificate
- $50 worth of PDFs from DriveThruRPG [5] (email us what you want and we’ll buy it for you)
- Digital editions of any 3 Engine Publishing [2] books (you choose the books)
- Digital editions of any 2 Engine Publishing [2] books (your choice)
- The digital edition of any 1 Engine Publishing [2] book (your choice)
I hope you’ll take a moment to check out the New Game Day [6] website, and that you’ll come back to share your experiences in our giveaway/celebration thread. Happy gaming!

I hope you’ll consider celebrating New Game Day, and if you do then drop by to share what you played!

We did celebrate. Played pandemic with the family for the first time and also played Dark Heresy with a couple of my players for the first time over the weekend… It was a good kickstart to the year, as January was slow…

I’ll be hosting a The End of The World: Zombie Apocalypse game, that arrived just last week.
Definitely a New Game Day for me 🙂

I’ve been curious about this one. I love zombie apocalypse stuff, and the core mechanic sounds simple and flexible.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on it after your session.

We played The Witcher Board Game at my house.
It looked intimidating with all the pieces but was quite easy and fun to play. It is only barely competitive. We had a good time.

We are very excited about new game day – its snowing here in NY so my little guy didn’t have school. We played shoot and ladders (but we call it turtle and hare) – It was his first time playing and he loved it. Granted I had to double up on the amount of squares, because he like long games.
We will be trying an RPG later tonight. It will be the first for both of us….wish us luck ^_^

Which RPG? And good luck!

We played the Kids & Critters RPG Trilogy. It turned out pretty fun. We had a really great time with it.
We also played a game called Monster Box – it was interesting. But the point was to have a good time which we did for sure. ^_^

Over the weekend we played a couple of new games that were under the Christmas tree… being a family with a couple of kids we tend towards faster, lighter “gateway” games. We played Small World and loved it – it took a little while to get the hang of it but by the second and third games we were really having fun. A real surprise was Three Dragon Ante, which was just a stocking stuffer but turned out to be a lot more fun than expected.

Tried 5th Edition D&D with my daughter for the first time! She had a blast (it was her first time playing an RPG) – we will definitely be playing it again soon.

We played our first Gumshoe game, “The Esoterrorists”. Now I’m hoping it will be the gateway drug to “Night’s Black Agents”…

I convinced some people to try some cave farming in Caverna and it was a close game but I was unable to win. It was still a blast though.

New Game Day hits here the first “free” day aftwe the lecture period and we used it to play a session of “Kobolds ate my baby”. It was hillarious.
The session was a wild mixup of Plants vs. zombies, Point&Click-Adventures and numerous references to popculture.
At some point we had disguised us as human childs and someone (no namedropping) decided to use a spell. It failed and the roll on the badstufftable resulted in an mad wizard on search for his grimoire. After that everything started to explode.
My voice is gone, it was a blast.

I’m mostly an RPG player (Castles & Crusades) and I’m heading over to my good friend’s house to game with him and my god-son (both Warhammer 40K players). We’re all going to step out of our comfort zones and have fun with a few games of King of Tokyo tonight. Gigasaur Rules!

The new game I tried out today was Robot Turtles. I had a snow day, so I got to sit down with my daughter and play it. It was pretty great. I’m impressed with how quickly she picked it up, and the implications it could have for her development.

Hello, it’s 10:50pm in Brazil and I’ve just finished playing the Edge of the Empire beginner game from FFG! Great system and very fun.

I ran the adventure out of the Pathfinder Beginner Box for my 8 year old son and his friend. This is the first exposure to role playing they’ve ever had and really loved it! I haven’t played any fantasy game for way too many years, and this was the kick in the butt that made me do it again. Thanks!

I am running with a few groups right now and one of them is all about the essence of New Game Day, we have taken a new gamer and family member into the fold and are exposing both them and the rest of the group to a variety of new systems we always wanted to play but never got around to. We’ve played Numenera, DnD 5e, Vampire the Requiem 2e, Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish Granting Engine, Anima, Marvel Heroic, Demon: The Descent, and when it arrives Exalted 3rd edition. All of these are games that the non-new players have always wanted to get around to, but have never had the chance to.
This week, along with new game day, we tore into the DnD 5e starter set. A gnome bard, half-elf warlock, and halfling ranger braved the depths of Klargs cave and ventured on to Phandalin.

Last night, a few friends helped my wife and I learn a new card game she just bought called “Superfight”. Fun and bizarre at the same time – you ‘construct’ a superhero out of the attributes listed on the cards in your hand and argue how they are better than your opponent’s superhero. Hilarity ensues!

Played Snake Oil. Fun party game. Lost in the tie-break round to someone selling a Shame Phone to a priest 🙁

My new game is QAGS which I heard about in my G+ stream. It’s a fun lighthearted rpg.

I was planning on playing Munchkin with my Pathfinder group tonight, but I got sick and stayed home. I was gifted this game by a friend in our gaming group that thought we needed a back up plan when a player could not attend.
It looks like a humorous and simple enough game, but I’ve not played it yet.
Once I am done an online course next week, I will try to check out a 5th Edition D&D drop in game at a local game shop.
We are almost finished the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path and after 2 years of playing Pathfinder, I would like to try some less crunchy games.
So… I did not play anything new tonight, except to push some toy cars around a new play table with my two year old son. Someday, I hope he will inherit my storytelling geekery.
His gnomish name is Fergle Wigglekicks.

My boyfriend and I played Mars Colony tonight for the first time. It’s a two player RPG – which was nice because we didn’t have to try to find a group of people like we usually do for our weekly systems. We had a lot of fun and it was easy to pick up and I think it has great replay value. We’ve had the game for more then half a year – so thanks for giving us an excuse to break it out 🙂

Today my girlfriend and I tried Mars Colony by Tim C. Koppang. The game describes itself as a role-playing game for two people about personal failure and government. That about sums it up actually. One person plays a consultant sent from Earth to help get a struggling Martian colony back on track. You have too much to fix and not enough time to do it. If you fail, you can lie and keep things going for another day. My girlfriend had to lie early on to keep from failing right at the beginning and when she pushed her luck in the late game she was caught in a lie and saw much of her success erased in the subsequent scandal. It’s an elegantly simple game played with two people that’s surprisingly powerful.

Hi all,
yesterday evening I started my first adventure/campaign (we will see) at Dungeon World. It was quite a good night, without any of my players (and I only once) having experience with the Powered by the Apocalypse system. They were a bit puzzled at the beginning by the simplicity of the system but after a while the grabbed the mood and the way to play. For sure we will continue this adventure and I bet I can turn it into a campaign.

And Sunday afternoon, I tried for the first time Descent. A friend of mine bought the game plus *ALL* the expansions in a bundle and he was impatient to try all of this. So we had managed to meet last Sunday to start this campaign that should last for 4 Sundays.
He told to us that he wanted to put into the game a lot of RPG aspects, but, perhaps due to the lack of experience with the rules, he failed miserably, keeping this game a pure tactical, min-max game. We will see whether with more experience these RPG aspects will come as well.

I made my group play Kobold Story, where the players control a tribe of Kobolds who must perform tasks given by the necromancer who employs them. High mortality rate, much much silliness, and lots of laughter while they tried to kidnap a virgin from the nearby village and tried to defend their caves against level 1 adventurers. I highly recommend it 🙂

Last month I pulled out Gamma World for a one shot adventure with players that had not played the original or the 4e reboot. I expected it to be a single night but we are playing it 4 weeks later and the players are enjoying it immensely. All of them liked the random PC generation, junk table, & outlandish monsters. Great fun for several people that had never played Gamma World before.
This last year I introduced players to Paranoia, Dread, & Turn of the Card. It has been a good year for new systems to try out.
After Gamma World I be will running Cortex System Firefly, which none of us in the group have played in before. That will be interesting and I look forward to it.

We started up a new game of the Mistborn Adventure Game this weekend. We are setting it in the Alloy of Law time period. Most of us have read the books, but none of us have been able to play the game yet, and so we are excited by the opportunities in this game.
Character creation went well, and we are looking forward to continuing the campaign with a new game for the new year.

Sadly I had to work a 12 hour shift so only got in one new game.
Tried out Battle Sheep with my two girls. Not a bad game and I think it would be good with adults but it was a bit much for my little ones. They do like playing with the bits though

I never made it back to the computer to post yesterday, but I played two games on 2/2 in celebration of New Game Day: Scrabble Junior with my family, and the free solo RPG The Plant. Good stuff.
Thanks to everyone who took part in New Game Day 2015!
