Entrances to Hell

Along the lines of Use Your Town in Your Next Game [1], I recently came across Entrances to Hell [2] (thanks, Boing Boing [3]!).

Once you get past the lame navigation, this site presents a variety of user-submitted pictures of what could be entrances to Hell. There’s a good mix of modern and ancient locations, and some very fun ones (like this stairway in Mexico guarded by hellcats [4], which is actually kind of creepy).

Apart from GMing With Pictures [5], I dig this site for two reasons. One is that these photos make great inspiration for supernatural games, and the other is that I love the idea of a modern world filled with what are, in many cases, very innocent-looking portals to Hell.

It’d be a perfect fit for Dark Matter, Unknown Armies and similar games, and it sounds like a neat premise for a campaign.

Drop a little creepy music, show them the picture, slowly describe their steps down making an echo with a cup on a board . . .

Yeah you could definitely get some good creep out from your players and set the mood for their adventure. Very nice!

I am using one of these pics in combination with JA’s suggestions from above in my game this Saturday. I have the perfect scene already planned for the adventure, and this is just icing on the cake!

Those are really great. I had already been using photographs of caverns, but many of these bring an urban element I didn’t have.

The urban aspect really got my mental gears turning — it’s got a very pseudo-X-Files/Dark Matter vibe, at least for me.
